Week 9: IF and Community Building

Today we'll take a quick glimpse at a fun pseudo-IF piece called Wikihistory — looks like the literary world is getting into the interactive/collaborative groove! Then Claudia will show us Soap Zone, Tauri will present an IF community, Josh will give us a tour of Protagonize, and Sharon will find us something tasty, too.

Then we'll look at a short article called Six Conditions that Form Online Communities. How do the six conditions apply to the community and the content we're creating? Are there more conditions we can identify and implement?

For the rest of class, I'll hold a writing mechanics clinic for anyone who wants help.

HOMEWORK:
  1. Add at least three ideas for the BECA Online Community to the class wiki. Each idea should include a link to an example. Be sure to include your name at the end of your entries.
  2. Write one blog post (500 words, three links, one image/video/sound file, proofread).
  3. Play a lot, rest a lot, and do a lot of something that makes you happy over break — I'll give a quiz on that if I have to!

In my perspective, the six conditions do apply to our community because we are creating an accessible meeting place that will allow us BECA majors to incorporate our thoughts and work. In doing so, we share our ownership because we are representing ourselves, and our work as Broadcasting professionals. Essentially it would be wise to have one sole person in charge of devoting enough time to set the tone for others to follow, but as long as students express themselves and deliver information under the guidelines we create, we can all gain knowledge about what’s happening. If we focus on content that focuses on BECA students and their careers, it can be entertaining, especially if we upload samples of our work. And to make our community even more attractive, I think we should implement the need for certain privacy regulations especially for written material. Privacy is an important condition because students put time and efforts in their work, and it would be horrible for others to steal our ideas.
